Listed harbour warehouse

A net store by the harbour, opened to north light and given back to working hands.

A former net store turned into a design studio. Brick, steel and north light, with the harbour on the doorstep.

The warehouse kept its brick shell, its timber trusses and the long doors that once opened onto the quay. Inside, a steel mezzanine adds space without touching the old walls, and north-facing rooflights give the studio an even light from morning to evening.

From brief to building.

The question we were asked, how we answered it, and what changed once people moved in.

01

The challenge

A listed warehouse with a leaking roof and poor daylight, and a client who needed room for forty people, a workshop and a public gallery.

02

Our approach

We repaired the brick shell and the trusses rather than replacing them, inserted a free-standing steel mezzanine and opened north-facing rooflights along the ridge. The quay doors were restored so the workshop can spill onto the harbour.

03

The outcome

The studio moved in on schedule and uses 40 percent less energy than its previous office. The ground-floor gallery now hosts exhibitions open to the harbour community.

Old shell, new floor.

A steel mezzanine stands free of the historic walls, while north rooflights bring an even light deep into the plan.

Kept, repaired, added.

What was there was repaired; what is new is honest about being new.
